Free Interactive Education Program Announced for Patients With Type 2 Diabetes and Their Caregivers

Pro-ficiency, a leading provider of interactive online patient education tools, announces its collaboration with PVI, PeerView Institute for Medical Education, Inc. in their joint, interactive program, establishing an innovative online resource to support type 2 diabetes patients and their caregivers in raising awareness about the risks associated with and treatments to prevent heart disease. The program is freely available to all participants.

Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Almost 70% of people over the age of 65 with diabetes will die of heart disease.

“A type 2 diabetes diagnosis can be a very traumatic experience, but as medicine improves so do options for patients and their caregivers,” says JoAnne Schaberick, co-founder of Pro-ficiency. JoAnne continues, “A big first step in helping this community is to encourage a healthy dialogue with the care team, including shared goals and expectations. This program provides medical information as well as important tips on working with care providers. We are very excited to be working with Gary Scheiner, AADE's 2014 Diabetes Educator of the Year, and PeerView to bring this current, useful, and clinically relevant information to those overcoming the challenges of living with type 2 diabetes."

Regarding type 2 diabetes, Gary Scheiner says, "More than any other chronic health condition, diabetes requires extensive day-to-day involvement on the part of the patient. Countless decisions and lifestyle choices affect one's ability to manage diabetes successfully. An educated, motivated patient is the best medicine!" This new program aims to both better inform and motivate patients and their caregivers to seek appropriate care for their type 2 diabetes.

In response to this innovative program, PeerView president Ted Singer writes, “Patients are often hesitant to speak up and ask questions when in the presence of their doctor or other healthcare professionals. They may be intimidated, nervous, shy, or any combination of the three. We also know that as online communities have developed and matured, patients are often more comfortable communicating in a virtual environment. By allowing patients to interact with virtual representations of clinicians and experts, Pro-ficiency’s ProPatient platform provides a ‘consequence-free’ environment for learning about type 2 diabetes and modeling conversations they will have with their healthcare team during actual appointments. We are excited to help facilitate improved communication and shared decision-making between patients and type 2 diabetes treaters via this novel platform.”

The program is freely available and can be accessed at http://www.propatient.com/dm3.
